Chromium Supplements Basic Facts

By: Paul Easton

Imagine this scenario: your physician tells you that you have become glucose intolerant, and that you are in the pre-stage of type 2 diabetes.

You know that this is a serious condition that usually strikes adults over age 50. If untreated, it can result in limb amputation, blindness or even death.

Your physician tells you that NOW is the time to do everything you can to regulate glucose (sugar) levels in your body through a healthy eating style and perhaps using a chromium supplement.

Chromium? What is it, and what can it do for you? You've never even heard of chromium! But if you look at the label on your multi-vitamin, chances are you'll find chromium listed as an ingredient, measured in micrograms (mcgs).

Even if you're not diabetic, chromium benefits your body in a number of ways, such as regulating your metabolism and energy level, maintaining a healthy weight, and increasing muscle strength.

Although chromium's action on weight loss is still the subject of medical research, you and your physician may agree for you to try a chromium supplement for this purpose.

It's certain that feeling tired all the time and having little energy for beneficial exercise won't help you lose weight, so what have you got to lose by trying a chromium supplement in a dose recommended by your physician?

Many foods contain natural dietary chromium: fruits, vegetables, dairy products, whole grains, high-yeast foods, meat, poultry and seafood.

But chromium is not absorbed well by the body, leading to chromium deficiency. However, chromium picolinate supplements are a combination of picolinic acid and chromium that is much better absorbed by your body.

If you're diabetic, over age 50,pregnant, or breast feeding, a chromium picolinate supplement could make all the difference in your overall health!

When purchasing a chromium supplement at a store or through a reputable online vendor, choose a supplement that contains between 20 and 35 mcgs of chromium picolinate or another chromium form that is well-absorbed by the body.

The Department of Health regards this amount of chromium to be generally safe, although medical research about chromium's role in your body's health continues.

Be sure to check the expiration date on the label to make sure your chromium supplement is fresh and genuine. Beware fake supplements that can sometimes be detected through vague and misleading labels, and sold by vendors who seem uninformed about chromium supplements in general.

These chromium imposters may actually harm your health!

Yet another reason to consult your physician before taking a chromium supplement is that it may negatively interact with your prescriptions medications and other medicines and supplements. You may also have allergies that could be adversely affected by an increased amount of chromium in your system.

Once you find a local store or online vendor you can trust to deliver pure, reliable chromium supplements, chances are that you may experience an increased energy level, stronger and more flexible muscle strength, weight maintenance, and proper regulation of pancreatic insulin.
