Tips for Starting a Healthy Lifestyle

By: Yuki Shoji

We don't tend to think that when we munch a juicy burger, supplemented by crisp fries and an icy col Imagine what it would be like to be thin, to be attractive, to be healthy. Now imagine what it would be like to still be all of these things when your 50 or 60 or 70. Guess what? You don't have to imagine them. You can actually bring them to life by living a healthy lifestyle.

The most important thing you need when deciding to undertake a healthy lifestyle change is the desire to succeed. If your goal is to lose weight, then it should also be part of your goal not to ever gain it back again. You have to want to make the change permanent. However, one of the biggest problems people face when they reach a resolution to change to a healthier lifestyle is how to start. The following will help make this transition a lot easier.

Tip for Starting a Healthy Lifestyle #1 See Your Doctor

It is important that you visit your doctor so that you can figure out how much weight you need to lose and how you should go about losing it, or if you actually need to lose weight at all.

Your doctor is going to want to know the following.

Whether or not you have a family history of heart disease
Whether you smoke
How active you are on a daily basis
If you have high blood pressure
If you have diabetes

Whether these factors affect you at all will be incremental in developing a healthy diet and exercise plan that best suits you.

Tip for Starting a Healthy Lifestyle #2 Figuring Out Your Proper Weight

The goal here is not to look at your favorite movie star and decide you want to way the same as them. What is good for the goose is not always good for the gander, as the saying goes. Most overweight people only need to lose 5% to 15% of their bodyweight in order to be healthy and look more attractive.

Tip for Starting a Healthy Lifestyle #3 Understand That it is Not Easy

The why and how of your being unhealthy will not be the same as everyone else, which is why you will have to decide on a healthy diet and exercise regimen that suits you best. Every person's metabolism varies and the way they respond to exercise is different also. Don't be disappointed if you only lose weight at the rate of one pound a week; in fact, this is actually a healthy rate in which to lose weight.

Once you've done the above, the next step is to get started. Don't continue putting off your lifestyle change. Every day that you do is a day that you could have spent feeling healthier and better about yourself. Don't let yourself get discouraged, stay vigilant in your mission to get healthy and you will reach your goal. Remember, you're not going on a diet, but changing your lifestyle for the better.
